The heat index here today in Wilmington, DE is 100+ degrees. I don’t even want the curtains open because looking at the sun makes me hot. I just want to close those curtains and hide!
Some people go out to eat in this weather because it’s too hot to cook. I cook because it’s too hot to go out. I can’t breathe out there.
Too hot to cook? Maybe I’m thinking about the 1960’s when air-conditioning wasn’t what it is today (if you were fortunate enough to have air-conditioning at all). We had one window air-conditioner in the living room – that was it for the whole house. And my father wouldn’t let us run it just any time. HE got to decide. Imagine! (I hear women can even vote now.)
I remember my mother coming home from work… putting on her bathing suit and hopping into the shower to cool off before she started dinner – soaking wet. We were rugged back in the olden days – or I should say SHE was rugged. I was always a wimpy whiner. She cooked. I sat in front of the fan.
I guess there were some take-out places – even then, but there weren’t nearly as many as there are today. We had McDonalds, Gino’s (does anyone remember Gino’s), or pizza. That was about it. Take-out was not an acceptable dinner at our house.
ANYWAY… Fortunately (thanks to the talents of my son, Greg), I have a brand new studio in the basement which is very coooooooool! I think it’s partly because of the whole “cold air sinks” thing. Sometimes I just love science.
It is still a work in progress, but that’s what it looks like so far. Maybe in my next post I’ll post some pictures of the whole basement to warehouse renovation.
And what was I making in this beautiful studio today? I was making a custom bangle for a woman who wanted these bracelets as gifts. Super cute! If you have something special that you’d like to have, let me know. I’d love to make it for you.
I hope you have a happy place where you can duck this heat! (Unless you love it… then… yay you!)
“What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.”
